| CHRP as well as this newsletter was created out of need. Feathered Follies, our wonderful local bird store, is inundated with birds looking for permanent homes. It is impossible to turn these birds away, and yet, it is expensive to get them the veterinary care that they require and feed and care for them at the store until homes can be found. As companion birds become more and more popular as pets, it is obvious that many people purchase without knowledge of the long lived, high maintenance, labor intensive, psychologically sensitive, intelligent wild creatures that they are bringing into their homes. After the novelty wears off, or a baby is due, a move is coming, a new job or family member enters the scene, the children grow up....this poor bird is "donated" to Feathered Follies. The people's guilt is lifted because Laurie will care for their bird. "It'll be in a better place." It is our hope that we can create a network of caring individuals to foster these birds in their homes, rehabilitate the ones who need specialized attention, with the intent of placement in a permanent home with bird-educated people. CHRP will also offer classes for those interested in becoming foster homes, in adopting a parrot, and those that already have parrots and want to learn more. Most important is to take this series of classes if you are thinking of getting your first parrot! |
